A Battle of Taste and Environmental Convictions for Ecolabeled Seafood: A Choice Experiment AgEcon
Roheim, Cathy A.; Johnston, Robert J..
This paper describes a choice experiment addressing preferences for ecolabeled seafood, in which the experimental design allows for choices among various fresh seafood products. The primary emphasis is the potential trade-off between taste (i.e., a favored species) and the presence of an ecolabel, when multiple seafood products are available.

A Bayesian Examination of Anchoring Bias and Cheap Talks in Constructed Markets AgEcon
Aadland, David; Caplan, Arthur J..
We present a theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between anchoring bias, hypothetical bias, and cheap talk in constructed markets. In our theory, interviewers provide agents with signals such as cheap talk and bid values while eliciting the value for nonmarket goods. In response to these signals, agents revise their prior distributions over the value of the good. Previous empirical studies have failed to account for the interaction between cheap talk and anchoring during this updating process, leading researchers to incorrectly assess the effects of cheap talk in reducing hypothetical bias. In particular, we predict that cheap talk will appear to be more effective for relatively large bids. We test our theory in an experimental...

A Bayesian Implementation of the Standard Optimal Hedging Model: Parameter Estimation Risk and Subjective Views AgEcon
Shi, Wei; Irwin, Scott H..
We develop a Bayesian implementation of the standard optimal hedging model to analyze the impact of hedgers' subjective views on their hedging behavior. The results show the subjective views have a substantial impact on hedgers' optimal positions, explaining the large cross-sectional and time series variation of hedging positions in practice.

A Bilateral Comparison of Fruit and Vegetable Consumption: United States and Canada AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Patterson, Paul M..
Many public programs promote diets rich in fruits and vegetables based on evidence of the derived health benefits. Still, produce consumption in the United States lags behind other nations, even its most culturally similar neighbor--Canada. This study uses a structural latent variable model to test the role played by quality and health information in explaining observed differences in produce consumption. The Alchian-Allen effect predicts that higher quality, higher absolute margin produce will be exported, suggesting quality may be an important demand factor in importing nations such as Canada. The results show that dietary health information is significant in expanding demands. Quality also promotes fruit consumption in Canada.

A Bioeconomic Model of the Soybean Aphid Treatment Decision in Soybeans AgEcon
Olson, Kent D.; Badibanga, Thaddee Mutumba.
Since its first detection in the North Central region in July 2000, the soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsamura) has caused considerable loss in soybean (Glycine max L.) yield, bean quality, and producer income. Discovered first in Wisconsin and then in adjoining states, it is currently distributed in 21 US states and parts of Canada. In 2003, over 42 million acres of soybean in the North Central US were infested and over 7 million acres were treated with insecticides to control soybean aphid (Landis et al. 2003). Populations exceeding 24,000 aphids per plant and 40% losses in seed yield have been reported (DiFonzo & Hines 2002). Even prior to the outbreak of 2003, the Soybean Strategic Pest Management Plan identified soybean aphid as one of the key...

A biological treatment technique for wool textile BABT
Xiao-Wei,Yu; Guan,Wen-Jun; Yong-Quan,Li; Ting-Jing,Guo; Ji-Dong,Zhou.
A biological treatment technique for wool textile was carried out by enzymes degradation coupled with H2O2 oxidation. The results demonstrated that the technique had ideal effects on wool textile such as better softness, plump and less loss of bursting stress. Because of mild reaction conditions, less textile damage and less environmental pollution, this technique for wool textile treatment could have promising prospect.

As doadoras...

A Brief Summary of U.S. Farm Program Provisions AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Anderson, David P.; Outlaw, Joe L.; Campiche, Jody L..
This publication began as a need for a short summary of farm programs and farm bills for two agricultural economics courses focusing on agricultural policy -- ag. economics 429, and ag. economics 614. Over time, it became clear that many students taking these courses had less and less background in agriculture and less (even cursory) knowledge of policies than those of the recent past. After this list was developed, a number of other professional agricultural economists found copies and began to use it, hence its publication in a more structured form. The list of Farm Program Provisions is not all-inclusive. It certainly does not contain all the laws and provisions that have affected agriculture over the years. However, it is an easy reference to farm...

A business performance index model that measures wealth change in Australian farm businesses AgEcon
Sefton, Clive A.; Cox, Rodney J..
This paper presents an evaluation of a farm-business assessment model that uses financial performance measures and tracks ‘wealth change’ to evaluate performance trends over time, and ranks the relative business performance of commercial participants. Its core component involves the use of comparative analysis, which is structured as an introductory rapid-assessment model, together with a ranking system that has been designed to differentiate the relative performance levels of farm businesses. The system has been labelled as the Business Performance Index (BPI) model to reflect its performance-ranking role that explores the relationships, if any, between farmer attitudes and business performance. The BPI model is discussed within the context of the debate...

A case of homonymy in fossil verrucid barnacles: Verruca withersi (Crustacea, Thoracica) Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Buckeridge, J.S..
For fossil verrucid barnacles, the name Verruca withersi appears to have been used twice; Schram & Newman described material from the Albian-Cenomanian (Cretaceous) of Colombia, while Kruizinga had previously recorded a new species from the Pleistocene(?) or perhaps younger strata of Sumba (Indonesia). We do not consider V. withersi Schram & Newman to be a cirripede, therefore no replacement name is needed for this junior synonym. Verruca withersi Kruizinga is a valid species related to the extant V. cookei.

A Case Study of China's Commercial Pork Value Chain AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Hu, Dinghuan; Fang, Cheng.
In China, with the cost of improved technology rising, surplus labor shrinking, and demand for food quality and safety increasing, it will be just a matter of time before the country’'s hog production sector will be commercialized like that of developed countries. However, even if China'’s cost of production converges to international levels, as shown in this case study, China may continue to retain some competitive advantage because of the labor-intensive nature of the marketing services involved in hog processing and meat distribution. The supply of variety meats offers the most promising market opportunity for foreign suppliers in China. The market may open further if the tariff rate for variety meats is reduced from 20% and harmonized with the pork...

A cladistic analysis of the genera of Macrothricidae Norman & Brady (Crustacea, Cladocera, Radopoda) Zoologia
Elmoor-Loureiro,Lourdes M. A..
A cladistic analysis of the genera of the Macrothricidae (Crustacea, Cladocera, Radopoda) was performed based on 36 morphological characters, and including 15 terminal taxa (three as outgroups). The single tree obtained from this analysis supported the monophyly of Macrothricidae and Macrothricinae. The group called as "non-Macrothricinae" was indicated as paraphyletic. Neothricidae was also not supported.
